Open-Mouth Bagger vs Valve Bagger: Which One Fits Your Product?

Open-Mouth Bagger vs Valve Bagger: Which One Fits Your Product?

Bagging equipment buying guide

Both machines fill industrial bags, but they suit different products, bags and budgets. This guide compares them side by side so you can shortlist the right type before you request quotes.

An open-mouth bag is filled from the top, then sewn or heat sealed.

The short answer

CHOOSE OPEN-MOUTH IF…

You pack free-flowing granules

Grain, rice, seed, feed pellets, beans, sugar, fertilizer granules and plastic pellets. You want low-cost woven PP, paper or laminated bags, a choice of sewing or heat sealing, and the option to automate bag placing later.

CHOOSE A VALVE BAGGER IF…

You pack fine, dusty powders

Cement, mortar, fine minerals, flour-type powders and some chemicals. A valve bag closes itself after filling, keeps dust inside and stacks into very square pallets, at a higher cost per bag.

EWINALL builds open-mouth bagging systems for granular agricultural and food products. If your product is better suited to a valve bagger, our engineers will tell you so.

Side-by-side comparison

Factor Open-mouth bagger Valve bagger
How the bag is filled The bag mouth is clamped open under a spout; product drops in from above. The bag is slipped onto a filling spout through a small valve in one corner.
How the bag is closed Sewing, heat sealing, or sewing with crepe tape. The valve sleeve self-closes; ultrasonic or heat sealing is optional.
Best products Free-flowing granules and pellets: grain, rice, seed, feed, beans, sugar, granular fertilizer. Fine or aerated powders: cement, mortar, mineral fillers, some flours and chemicals.
Bag types Woven PP, laminated woven PP (BOPP), kraft paper, PE film bags; flat, gusseted or handle bags. Purpose-made valve bags (paper or PP), usually printed to order.
Bag cost Lower; widely available from local suppliers. Higher per bag; fewer suppliers.
Dust control Good with dust extraction at the spout; adequate for most granules. Very good; the closed valve keeps fine powder inside.
Automation path Manual bag placing → automatic bag placing → full line with robot palletizing. Manual placing or automatic bag applicators; often rotary packers for cement.
Product changeover Simple; easy to see and clean the spout and hopper. Depends on feeder type; fine powders need more clean-out.

Which is more accurate?

Accuracy depends more on the weighing method than on the bag style. Most open-mouth systems for granules use net weighing: product is weighed in a scale hopper first, then discharged into the bag, so the bag never affects the reading. Many valve packers use gross weighing, where the bag is weighed while it fills. For free-flowing granules, net weighing gives tight, repeatable bag weights at high speed.

For example, EWINALL's DCS-50FB3 dual-hopper net-weigh scale is published at ±0.1% F.S. Ask for the expected accuracy on your actual product; light or irregular materials behave differently.

Semi-automatic or fully automatic open-mouth?

SEMI-AUTOMATIC

An operator places each bag

  • Lower investment and fastest payback for small and mid-size plants.
  • Handles many bag sizes and materials with little changeover.
  • Example: DCS-50FB3, 5–25 kg at 660–1,080 bags/hour; 25–50 kg at 360–660 bags/hour.
FULLY AUTOMATIC

The machine picks, opens and fills the bag

  • Cuts labor on each shift and keeps output steady.
  • Works best with consistent, non-porous bags (suction bag pick-up).
  • Examples: QZB-900D for 5–25 kg at 600–900 bags/hour; QZB-700M for 25–50 kg at 500–600 bags/hour.

Five questions to answer before you buy

  1. What is the product?Granule, pellet or powder? Bulk density, particle size and whether it is dusty or sticky.
  2. What bag and weight?Bag material, size, style and target weight, e.g. 25 kg or 50 lb.
  3. How many bags per hour?Today and in three years. This decides semi- vs fully automatic.
  4. How will bags be closed?Sewing, heat sealing or both, plus coding or check weighing.

Fifth question: what happens after the bag is closed? If you plan to add robot palletizing and stretch wrapping later, leave space and conveyor height for it now.

An open-mouth bagger is usually the first machine in a longer line: bag closing, check weighing, metal detection, conveying, then robotic palletizing such as the EC-171 and stretch wrapping.

Frequently asked questions

Can an open-mouth bagger handle flour or other powders?

Yes, with an auger or screw feeder and dust extraction at the spout. EWINALL's DCS-50FT is designed for powder products. Very fine, aerated powders such as cement are usually better in valve bags.

Is a valve bagger faster than an open-mouth bagger?

Not necessarily. Speed depends on the feeder, the weighing method and the number of spouts. For granules, a dual-hopper open-mouth scale or a fully automatic open-mouth line is typically as fast as a single-spout valve packer.

Can I start semi-automatic and upgrade later?

Often yes. Tell us your three-year output target and we can lay out the line so the scale, conveyor and closing unit can be reused when you add automatic bag placing or palletizing.
